Why TikTok's captions are not translations
TikTok generates automatic captions, and people often assume those captions are translated. They are not. Auto captions transcribe the audio in the language it was spoken in. If the creator speaks Turkish, the captions are Turkish. There is a translate option for post descriptions and comments, but that covers the written text around the video, not the words in it.
This is the gap most people run into: the interesting part of a TikTok is usually what the person is saying, and that is exactly the part TikTok will not translate for you.

- Open the video in TikTok.
- Tap the Share arrow on the right side of the screen.
- In the row of app icons, choose a video translation app such as SenseIT. If you do not see it, scroll right, tap More, then Edit, and switch it on.
- The app pulls the spoken content, translates it into your chosen language, and shows the result.
- Pick how much detail you want: a short summary if you just need the gist, or the full translation if the wording matters.
You never download the video and you never copy the link. The whole exchange happens through the iOS share sheet.
What about videos with no speech
Translation works from the spoken track, so a clip that is only music, dancing or text on screen has nothing to translate. If the meaning lives in on screen text rather than speech, a translation app that works from audio will not help; a screenshot and a text translator is the better tool for that case.
Translating comments versus translating the video
These are two different problems and it is worth separating them:
- Comments and captions: TikTok can translate these itself. Tap the See translation option under a description or comment.
- The spoken audio: TikTok cannot translate this. You need an app that transcribes the speech first and then translates the transcript.
How accurate is it
Accuracy depends mostly on the audio. Clear speech in a quiet room transcribes very well, and the translation that follows is usually faithful enough to understand the point, the tone and the joke. Fast slang, heavy background music, several people talking over each other, or a strong regional accent will all reduce quality. Treat the output as a reliable everyday translation, not as a certified one.
Does this work on Reels and Shorts too
Yes. The share sheet method is identical on Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and Facebook videos, because it is an iOS feature rather than a TikTok feature. Anywhere there is a Share button and spoken audio, the same flow applies.
